Solenoid Valves For Camshaft Adjustment, Checking

Recommended special tools and equipment

- VAG1526A hand multimeter
- V.A.G 1527 B Voltage Tester
- VAG1594A connector test kit
- VAG1598/31 test box

Test requirements:
- Fuse for solenoid valves for camshaft adjustment OK.
- Fuel Pump (FP) Relay OK. Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17 and Relay Activation, Checking
- Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay -J271- OK.
- Ignition switched off.

NOTE:
- In vehicles without Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay -J271-, voltage is supplied to camshaft adjustment solenoid valves via the Fuel Pump (FP) relay.
- In vehicles with Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay -J271-, voltage is supplied to camshaft adjustment solenoid valves via -J271-.

Work procedure

Cylinder bank 1 (right):

- Remove air guide hose -1- between Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and throttle valve control module (arrows).
- Disconnect electrical harness connector from Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment (-2-).

Cylinder bank 2 (left):

- Remove engine cover (arrows).

- Disconnect electrical harness connector (arrow) from Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208-.

Checking internal resistance

- Connect multimeter at valve for resistance measurement.
- Specified value: 10 ... 18 Ohms

If specified value is not obtained:
- Replace the respective solenoid valve for camshaft adjustment.

If specified value is obtained:

Checking voltage supply

- Connect e.g. V.A.G 1527 B voltage tester as follows:

Harness connector Measure to
Terminal

1 Engine Ground (GND)

- Switch ignition on.
- LED must light up.
- Switch ignition off

If LED does not light up:
- Check wire connection from terminal 1 of harness connector via fuse to Fuel Pump (FP) Relay -J17- or Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay -J271- (depending on version) for open circuit according to wiring diagram.
- Specified value: Wire resistance max 1.5 Ohms
- If necessary, repair wire connection.

If voltage supply is OK:

Checking control wire
- Connect test box to wiring harness of Engine Control Module (ECM); ECM is not connected. Test Box, Connecting For Wiring Test

- Check the following wire connections for open circuit according to wiring diagram:
- Valve -1- for camshaft adjustment -N205- (bank 1):

Harness connector Test box
Terminal Socket

2 115

- Valve -2- for camshaft adjustment -N208- (bank 2):

Harness connector Test box
Terminal Socket

2 120

- Specified value: Wire resistance max 1.5 Ohms

- Also check wires for short circuit to each other as well as to B+ and Ground (GND).
- Specified value: infinity Ohms (no continuity)
- If necessary, repair wire connection.

If no malfunctions are found in wires:
- Replace Engine Control Module (ECM).

If no malfunctions are detected:
- Replace mechanical camshaft adjuster.

Final procedures
After repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the mentioned sequence:
1 - Check DTC memory "Mode 3: Check DTC memory". Diagnostic Mode 3: Check DTC Memory
2 - If necessary, erase DTC memory "Mode 4: Reset/erase diagnostic data". Diagnostic Mode 4: Reset/Erase Diagnostic Data
3 - Generate readiness code. Readiness Code, Generating

- End diagnosis and switch ignition off.
