Engine and Transmission, Separating

Engine and transmission, separating
Sequence of Operations
^ Remove engine

Note:
^ All cable ties unfastened or cut open on removal are to be re-attached in same position on installation.
^ Re-attach heat insulation sleeves at same location on installation.

- Set down engine/transmission assembly on workbench or trolley and secure in position with wooden blocks.

WARNING:
^ Ensure that engine/transmission assembly rests safely to avoid any risk of accident
^ Never set down engine and transmission on sump or oil pan.
^ Relocate engine lifting tackle 3033 as described below before performing any further work on engine. The center of gravity shifts after unbolting transmission.

Note: To stop tight engine lifting eye and shackle from pressing against fuel rail when fitting engine, a suitable packing must be used (e.g. nuts, washers ...) to fill gap between engine lifting eye and shackle.

- Attach shackle 10-222 A12 to right rear engine lifting eye.
- When doing so, fill gap between shackle 10-222 A12 and engine lifting eye with packing -1- as shown.

- Attach lifting tackle 3033 to shackles 10-222 Al 2 and hook onto shop crane VAS 6100, as shown in this figure.
- Pre-tension lifting tackle slightly using shop crane VAS 6100.

- Disconnect connectors -1 -, -2- and -4-.
- Set wires aside.

Note: Illustration shows connectors in installation position.

- Unscrew front exhaust pipe nuts -1- to -3- from left exhaust manifold.

- Disconnect connector -2- at speedometer vehicle speed sensor (VSS) G22-.

Note: Ignore item -1-.

- Disconnect connectors -1 -and -2-.

Note: Illustration shows connectors in installation position.

- Remove bolt (arrow) at lug for right front exhaust pipe.

- Unscrew front exhaust pipe nuts -1- to -3- from right exhaust manifold.

- Disconnect connector -1 -.
- Remove bolts (arrows) and detach right engine support.

- Disconnect ground (GND) wire -1 -.
- Detach wires -3- and -4-.
- Screw out bolts -1- to -5- and detach starter.
- Screw out the 3 torque converter TORX socket head bolts (arrow) in opening of removed starter (give crankshaft a further 1/3 turn each time).

Note: When loosening torque converter bolts, provide support at center bolt of generator pulley.

- Screw out lower and then upper engine/transmission connecting bolts.
- Press torque converter off drive plate through starter opening in bell housing and at the same time detach engine from transmission.
- Secure torque converter in position in transmission to stop it from falling out.
