Coolant Fan -V7-, Testing

Coolant Fan -V7-, testing

Requirements for test:

^ Coolant Fan Fuse -S42- for radiator fan OK (in 8-way relay carrier, socket 19).
^ Fuse No. 229 OK (in fuse carrier)

- Remove cover (arrow) at power steering fluid reservoir.

- Remove electrical harness connector -2- from bracket and disconnect it.

Note: Disregard items 4- and -3-

Part 1:

Part 2:

- Connect multimeter (voltage measurement range) as follows:
^ Specified value: approximately battery voltage respectively

If specifications are not obtained:
- Eliminate open circuit in wiring (refer to wiring diagram).

If specifications are obtained:

- Connect multimeter (voltage measurement range) as follows:
- Switch on ignition.
^ Specification- approximately battery voltage

If specification is not attained:
- Eliminate open circuit in wiring (refer to wiring diagram).

If specification is obtained:

- Connect multimeter (voltage measurement range) between contact 2 and contact 3 on connector.
^ Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 is connected; vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" is selected. Ignition must be switched on.

Display on VAS 5051:
- Select diagnosis function "03 - Final control diagnosis" from menu -1-
- Press the (arrow) button repeatedly until following display appears:

Display on VAS 5051:
A - Actuator test is waiting - Continued switching required
12 - Radiator fan control 1
- Press the (arrow) button.

Display on VAS 5051:
A - Actuator is running - Continued switching allowed
^ Voltage should drop slowly from approximately battery voltage to approximately 8 Volts (and then rise again)

- Press the (arrow) button to exit from function "03 - Final control diagnosis".
- Switch off ignition.

If specification is not attained

- Connect test box V.A.G 1598/31 to connectors on wiring harness (engine control unit remains disconnected). Also connect ground clamp of test box to battery negative terminal (not shown in illustration).

WARNING: To prevent damage to electronic components, switch to respective measuring range before connecting measuring cable and observe test prerequisites.

Part 1:

- Test for open circuit and short to positive or ground in following wiring connections:

Part 2:

- Eliminate open circuit or short circuit using wiring diagram.

If no fault is found:
- Replace Coolant Fan -V7- with Coolant Fan Control (FC) Control Module -J293-.

Coolant Fan 2 -V177-, testing
Requirements for test:

^ Second Speed Coolant Fan Fuse -S104- for coolant fan OK (in 8-way relay carrier, socket 22)
^ Fuse No. 229 OK (in fuse carrier)

- Remove cover (arrow) at power steering fluid reservoir.

- Expose electrical harness connector (arrow) for Coolant Fan -2- -V177-

- Connect multimeter with test probes and plug adapters from VAG 1594 A between contact 1 and contact 2; connection for Coolant Fan 2 -V177- remains connected.

Display on VAS 5051
A - Actuator test is waiting - Continued switching required
11 - Radiator fan control 2
- Press the (arrow) button.

Display on VAS 5051:
A - Actuator is running - Continued switching allowed
^ Voltage should rise to approximately battery voltage (and then drop again)

If voltage is present:
- Replace Coolant Fan 2 -V177-.

If no voltage is present:
- Check all wiring connections to Coolant Fan Control (FC) Control Module 2 -J671- including control wire to engine control unit contact 104.

If no faults are found in wiring:
- Replace Coolant Fan Control (FC) Control Module 2 -J671-
