Thermostat: Service and Repair


Coolant thermostat, checking, removing and installing

Notes: Always replace seals and gaskets.

Removing
^ Drain coolant system.

Vehicles with air conditioning:

WARNING: The air conditioning refrigerant circuit must not be opened.

^ Unbolt front engine cover support from intake manifold.
^ Detach retainers for refrigerant hoses.





^ Unbolt A/C compressor, lift clear together with refrigerant hoses (do not disconnect) and tie in place on hood lock.

All vehicles:





^ Disconnect coolant hose from connection - 3 -.
^ Unscrew bolts - 4 - and remove connection, O - ring - 2 - and coolant thermostat

Installing
^ Clean and smooth down sealing surface for O - ring as required.
^ Insert coolant thermostat.
^ Installation position: bowed metal strip on thermostat must be vertical.
^ Moisten new O ring with coolant G 012 AS D.
^ Tighten bolts.
^ Fill up with coolant.

Tightening torque
Connection to cylinder block: 15 Nm

Testing coolant thermostat





^ Heat thermostat in water bath.
