Description of On-Board Diagnostics
General Information
Technical features of the instrument cluster
The Audi A6 is equipped with an LCD driver information system.
The Auto Check system monitors the brake system, coolant temperature, fuel level and engine oil pressure.
The driver information system incorporates the following displays:
- Driver information display with radio frequency and telephone data display
- Ambient temperature display
- On-board computer display
- Transmission range selector lever display for automatic transmission
The speedometer contains an LCD display for the odometer, driver information display and Service Reminder Indicator (SRI).
The indicator lamps are integrated in the speedometer and in the tachometer.
The instrument cluster is controlled by a microprocessor and has extensive On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities. If malfunctions occur in any of the system components, corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) are stored in the DTC memory of the instrument cluster. These can then be identified using the VAG1551 or VAG1552 Scan Tool (ST).
NOTE:
The following adaptation (adjustment) functions can be carried out on the instrument cluster:
- Adaptation of the fuel gauge sender resistance range
- Adaptation of the fuel consumption indicator
- Coding of language versions for the on-board computer and Auto Check system
- Adaptation of the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI)
- Adaptation of the odometer after replacement of the instrument cluster
Malfunction message "dEF" on trip recorder display
If the control module in the instrument cluster detects a malfunction in its permanent memory, the letters "dEF" will appear on the trip recorder display.
- If "dEF" appears on display, replace instrument cluster.
NOTE:
When replacing an instrument cluster:
- The instrument cluster must not be disassembled.
- All indicator lamps which have conventional bulbs can be replaced individually. On Board Diagnostic (OBD), Initiating Program
- If necessary, the instrument cluster can be replaced with an exchange unit.
- A damage report form must be completed and returned together with the faulty instrument cluster.
- Faulty units must always be returned in original packaging.
- The odometer and the service reminder indicator on the replacement instrument cluster can be adapted using the VAG1551 scan tool.
