Rear Window, Removing And Installing

Rear Window, Removing

Special tools and equipment

WARNING: Always wear protective goggles and leather gloves when removing a windshield.

- Remove rear lid.
- Remove molding from retaining clips.
- Remove rear seat bottom and seat back.
- Unclip rear shelf.
- Remove D-pillar trim.
- Pull off or unscrew connections for rear window defroster and window antenna, press connections on window toward center of vehicle.

Removing Undamaged Windshield







- Press awl through adhesive sealing material from inside in lower window corner, until eye of awl is visible outside of vehicle.
- Thread beginning of cutting wire through eye and pull into vehicle interior.
- Thread cutting wire through winding device and clamp securely.







- Lay cutting wire all around rear window as shown in illustration (dotted line).







- Press cutting wire - 1 - under rear window - 2 - all the way around.

3 - Adhesive sealing material







- Lay end of cutting wire around stop buffer (arrow) and tighten together with bolt for rear lid hinge.
- Insert VAG1474/10 protective foil between molded headliner and rear window.







- Cut first section.







- Reposition winding device as shown in diagram and attach relay pulley in bottom corner of window.
- Route cutting wire as shown.
- Cut adhesive up to point where wire no longer runs in relay pulley.







- Remove relay pulley and continue to cut adhesive.







- Reposition winding device as shown in diagram and attach relay pulley in top corner of window.
- Route cutting wire as shown.
- Cut adhesive up to point where wire no longer runs in relay pulley.
- Insert protective foil between molded headliner and rear window.
- Remove relay pulley and continue to cut adhesive.
- Repeat these steps in top right and bottom right corners of windshield.
- Cut window completely free.
- Remove window using double suction cups.

Removing Damaged Windshield

- Remove glass pieces up to adhesive material.
- Remove remaining glass and adhesive sealing material using carpet knife or electric knife.

Rear Window, Installing

- Prepare for window installation.







- Apply adhesive sealing material around circumference as shown. Note varying spacing dimensions to window edge.
- Using two double suction cups, insert window in window opening.
- Align windshield at sides.
- Press trim molding into retaining clips.
- Secure window in window opening using fabric reinforced adhesive tape.

Measurements For Adhesive Bead

- Press upper 5 spacers into side of adhesive bead at uniform intervals.
- Dimension - b - = 75 mm
- Press lower 2 spacers into side of adhesive bead.
- Dimension - c - = 80 mm
3 - Adhesive bead
- Note varying spacing dimensions to window edge.
- Dimension - a - = 6 mm
- Dimension - d - = 10 mm
4 - Lower gap cover

Gap Dimensions For Rear Window To Window Flange







1 - Rear window
- Gap at top: dimension - a - = 8 mm
- Gap at side: dimension - b - = 75 mm

- Adhesive bead must slightly overlap gap cover
