General System Description
O1V 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
The 5 forward gears and one reverse gear are produced with one Ravigneau planetary gear set and a single planetary gear attached in series. Power is introduced to the transmission through a hydrodynamic torque converter with an integrated converter lock-up clutch.
The transmission's operating modes are controlled electronically by a single Transmission Control Module located in the front passenger footwell under the carpet.
The demands on the vehicle transmission and its contribution to reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions without compromising acceleration, led to larger spacing between gear ratios. Only with larger spacing is it possible to run the engine in the lower fuel consumption operating ranges more frequently than the past. However, larger gear ratio spacing requires more gears so that the speed and traction steps during upshifts do not become too large and impair driveability. This led to the decision to develop the 5-speed automatic.
The 5 speed automatic 01V met the folling goals:
- Torque converter with controlled lockup for reduced fuel consumption and increased comfort.
- Controlled power shifts for improved shifting comfort.
- More developed Dynamic Shift Programs for better driveability and reduced fuel consumption.
- Maintenance-free with lifetime oil fill.
