Shift Linkage: Service and Repair







Notes:
- Adjusting shift linkage: refer to Adjustments
- Before removing shift linkage, remove center console at front and rear
- Remove crossmembers at front and rear as necessary, loosen heat shield and move toward rear
- Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine, remove three-way catalytic converter on right side
- Remove center rear duct for air conditioning

3. Retaining frame
4. Cover
- Carefully pry locking lugs out of center console at rear
5. Screw
6. Bushing
7. Cup seal
8. Circlip
- Do not overstretch when installing
9. Spacer bushing
10. Spring
11. Ball stop
- Place spring and bushing in ball stop and install on shift lever so that bushing and spring are on right-hand side in direction of travel
- Install ball stop before inserting circlip -19-

- Rounded side faces shift lever
14. Shift lever
- Can be inserted in ball housing in one position only
15. Nut
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
16. Leaf spring

- Always replace
- Rounded side faces toward ball housing
- Take out before removing ball stop
20. Ball housing
- Restriction for ball stop on left and right must be installed
- Install so that detent for reverse gear faces toward left
21. Shift linkage mounting

- 10 Nm (7 ft lb)
23. Reinforcing plate
24. Self-locking nut
- Always replace
- 10 Nm (7 ft lb)

26. Rear shift rod
27. Boot
- To remove and install:
Remove three way catalytic converter
Unscrew front and rear crossmembers
Remove heat shield
Carefully pull over shift rod

Note: When complete shift linkage has been removed, bellows can also be installed from inside passenger compartment.

29. Clamp
30. Bolt
- 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
- Before removing, remove front and rear crossmembers and heat shield
31. Self-locking bolt
- Always replace
- 20 Nm (15 ft lb)

Note: Adjusting shift linkage, refer to Adjustments.

WARNING! DO NOT re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Many fasteners are designed to be used only once and become unreliable and may fall when used a second time. This includes, but is not limited to nuts, bolts, washers, self-locking nuts or bolts, circlips, and cotter pins. Always follow the recommendations given in this publication. For replacements always use new parts.
