Transmission Cover, Replacing (Re-Calculating Shim S4)

If only the transmission cover is replaced, only shim S4 needs to be re-calculated.
- Clean housing mating surfaces.
- Place hollow shaft into cover and turn so that tapered roller bearing can settle.






- Set up measuring tools.
- Set dial indicator (3 mm range) to zero with preload of 1 mm.
- Remove holder VW 387 complete with dial indicator.
- Remove hollow shaft and bearing outer race together with thrust plate, shim and washer and install in new cover: refer to Disassembly and Assembly/Gears and Shafts/Pinion, Disassembling and Assembling. Service and Repair
- Fit dial indicator onto new transmission cover with holder VW 387.
- Record reading indicated on gauge.






Example

Note: If the value indicated on the dial indicator gauge is greater than 1.00, the thickness of shim S4 must be reduced by difference value x.

- Select shim from table: refer to "Pinion, Adjusting".
- Install transmission cover and check preload of tapered roller bearings for pinion and hollow shaft: refer to "Pinion, Adjusting".
