Cold Start Injector: Description and Operation
Cold Start Injector:
The cold start valve is used to provide fuel enrichment for easy starting, even at very low ambient temperatures. The valve is controlled by the fuel control ECU and operates for varying periods of time, depending upon the signal from the coolant temperature sensor. At very low temperatures, the valve provides additional fuel for as long as 10 seconds after initial cranking begins. At warmer temperatures, the duration is reduced. For example, if the coolant temperature sensor signals a coolant temp. of 0~C (32~F) the cold start valve will inject fuel into the intake manifold for approx. 3 seconds after the engine begins cranking. At 15~C (62~F) the valve will operate for approx. 2 seconds. If the temperature is warmer than approximately 38~C (100~F), the cold start valve does not operate at all (no enrichment is needed for starting at warm temperatures.)
