Idle Speed: Adjustments
Idle Speed, CO And Ignition Timing Must Be Checked And Adjusted Together
- connect tester according to manufacturer's instructions
NOTE: TDC sending unit must fit snugly into transmission housing.
- use adaptor (arrow) to attach test wire onto ignition coil terminal 1
- connect CO tester according to manufacturer's instructions
- measure CO at tail pipe
- do NOT run air conditioner (if equipped)
- run engine until oil temperature is above 80°C (176°F)
- if fuel lines were disconnected or replaced, bring engine speed to 3,000 rpm several times and let idle for at least 2 minutes
- turn OFF all electrical equipment
NOTE: While checking and adjusting, radiator fan must not be running.
- check idle speed
^ specification: 925 ± 75 rpm
- adjust if necessary to 925 rpm (arrow)
QUICK CHECK OF DISTRIBUTOR VACUUM ADVANCE/RETARD
- pull off vacuum retard hose from distributor connection
- engine speed must increase
- reattach retard hose
- increase engine speed to 3,000 rpm
- pull off vacuum advance hose from distributor connection
- engine speed must decrease
- reattach advance hose
- check idle speed
- specification: 925 ± 75 RPM
- adjust if necessary
- check timing and adjust if necessary by turning distributor. Leave vacuum hoses connected to distributor
- checking: 3° ± 2° ATDC
- adjusting: 3° ± 1° ATDC
- re-adjust idle speed if necessary
- pull breather hoses off valve cover and plug hoses (1982/83 models)
- remove cap from "T" piece on hose to charcoal canister (1982/83 models)
- check CO (at tailpipe)

- checking: 0.9% maximum
- adjusting: 0.5% + 0.40/c
1982/83 MANUAL TRANS.
- checking: 1.5% maximum
- adjusting: 1.0% + 0.5%
- remove plug and insert P377 (arrow) to adjust if necessary
^ turn screw clockwise to raise % CO
^ turn screw counterclockwise to lower % CO
NOTE: While checking and adjusting, radiator fan must not be running
CAUTION: When adjusting CO, do not push adjustment wrench down. Do not accelerate engine with tool in place. Remove tool after each adjustment and accelerate engine briefly before reading % CO
- re-adjust idle speed if necessary
- turn ignition OFF
- remove CO meter
- disconnect test wires from engine
- reinstall CO plug and crankcase ventilation hoses
