4 Cylinder Engine W/Manual Transmission
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Open heater control valve, remove expansion tank cap, and drain cooling system by disconnecting lower hose.
3. Remove upper and lower radiator hoses and disconnect wiring harness connectors from radiator fan and thermo switch.
4. On air conditioned vehicles, remove clips and grille. Remove bolts securing condenser to radiator.
5. Remove upper and lower rubber mounts, then radiator as an assembly with fan and fan shroud.
6. Disconnect clutch cable from transmission and support bracket.
7. Label, then disconnect all electrical connectors from engine.
8. Remove control pressure regulator, leaving fuel lines connected.
9. Remove hose and rear cover on alternator, where equipped, and disconnect wiring harness connections to alternator.
10. Disconnect wiring and heater hoses.
11. Label, then disconnect all vacuum hoses from engine.
12. Remove throttle cable.
13. On air conditioned models, remove air duct from throttle valve housing, air hose at auxiliary air regulator and remove fuel distributor, airflow sensor, fuel injectors, and air cleaner as an assembly.
14. On non-air conditioned models remove fuel injectors and cold start valve. Leave all fuel lines connected. Protect injectors and cold start valve with caps.
15. Disconnect hose from auxiliary air regulator.
16. Remove air conditioning compressor as follows:
a. Remove front engine mount bolts and remove mount.
b. Loosen nuts on outer half of crankshaft pulley, and remove air conditioning compressor drive belt.
c. Discharge refrigerant, and disconnect lines from compressor and support bracket. Plug all open lines and ports.
d. Disconnect wiring harness connector at compressor clutch and crankcase vent hose at valve cover.
e. Remove upper and lower compressor mount bolts and remove air conditioning compressor from vehicle.
17. Remove upper three bolts securing engine to transmission.
18. Remove nuts securing right and left engine mounts.
19. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold and front support and remove pipe.
20. Remove bolts securing flywheel inspection plate and remove plate.
21. On non-air conditioned models, remove bolts securing front engine mount and remove mount.
22. Disconnect wiring harness and battery cable connectors at starter and remove starter.
23. Remove lower two bolts securing engine to transmission, and loosen nuts securing engine mounts to subframe.
24. Support transmission and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
25. Raise engine, pry engine and transmission apart, and lift and guide engine from vehicle.
26. Reverse procedure to install, leaving engine mount bolts hand tight. Torque front engine mount bolts to 18 ft.lbs., and left and right bolts to 25 ft.lbs. with engine running at idle.
