The fuel pressure accumulator, Fig. 5, performs three functions:

1. It dampens the operating noise of the fuel supply pump.
2. It ensures sufficient output to the injectors, by delaying fluctuations in pressure within the supply circuit.
3. It maintains pressure in the circuit after shutting off the engine in order to prevent "vapor lock", and ease hot restarting procedures.
